“The openness and mobility between professions, HR innovation and learning organization are strong definers of Saint-Gobain overall.” – Benoit Montet Director of Top Employers France

The annual study conducted by the Top Employers Institute singles out the best employers in the world, that is, those that provide a high-quality work environment, encourage talent development at all levels and strive to continuously improve their HR practices.

Under the process applied by Top Employers, participating companies must meet very stringent criteria to be certified.

For each country, the study relies on a questionnaire covering 600 working condition practices, which are approved and then audited by the independent firm Grant Thornton.

With 35 countries certified, in addition to the “Top Employer Global” certification, Saint-Gobain also renewed its “Asia-Pacific”, “Europe”, “Latin America”, et “North America” certifications, and was awarded the “Middle-East” certification for the first time.

Saint-Gobain Attitudes at the heart of our new management style

The Top Employers study highlighted in particular the “Saint-Gobain Attitudes”, introduced by the Group at the end of 2016 and rolled out in 2017 to all countries where Saint-Gobain is present.

The five Attitudes cover the key conduct and attitude that all employees must develop in order to successfully embrace future challenges: cultivate customer intimacy, act as an entrepreneur, innovate, be agile, and build an open and engaging culture.

They concurrently reflect our decentralized method of management, working closely with people on the ground and customers, and a state of mind that unites all Saint-Gobain teams working closely with their stakeholders.

They apply whatever the business or level of responsibility. Worldwide, these Attitudes replaced the conventional skills and competency standards used during annual reviews.

Talent development through personalized support

A talented individual is a person who makes a difference and is an advantage for the future: whatever the hierarchical level, whatever the type of job, and for however long the person has been with the company.

Thus, Saint-Gobain’s development strategy is applicable to all profiles: to juniors with considerable room for growth, to professionals identified for their expertise all the way to potential future leaders.

This commitment to looking after our talented individuals and helping them grow and evolve in a personalized way, was one of the things identified by the Top Employers’ audit.

A learning organization

The commitment to strengthening our learning culture was also pointed out by Top Employers. Continuous and autonomous learning is at the heart of our employer promise. Our e-learning courses are available in up to 30 languages on a dedicated website accessible to all employees, including on their personal cellphone.

For the past two years, worldwide, and for all teams, we have also run the Learning Week, an entire week to address the subject of the learning company. Each year, the members of the General Management Committee attend a Learning Expedition, and our top managers engage in reverse mentoring.

Top Employers: an HR thinktank

For Saint-Gobain, the Top Employers study is an opportunity to discuss with other small or large companies the best HR practices, to learn about interesting initiatives, question our own practices and explain to others our most original approaches, as well as to talk together about the solutions to the challenges we all face ahead.
